COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore district has prepared a detailed report for the execution of the green schools program in three select schools in the district. These are among the 100 govt schools across the state shortlisted for the implementation of the green schools programme.The shortlisted schools in the district are the Anaimalai Government Tribal Residential Middle School, Mettupalayam Government Higher Secondary School and TA Ramalingam Chettiar Higher Secondary School, Coimbatore.As many as 300 schools in the state have been earmarked for the transformation under the Tamil Nadu Climate Change Mission, managed by the Tamil Nadu Green Climate Company (TNGCC).These schools will be developed into a self-sufficient model and made climate resilient. The other features include organic gardening, waste and resource management, plastic-free zone, rainwater harvesting, solar installation and cool roofing. These features will foster sustainable habits within the students.Additional collector (development) Sanket Balwant Waghe said the schools had been shortlisted based on the feasibility of the conversion. “It should have sufficient space for gardening and solar installation. The students will get a hands-on experience of the sustainable living model. The ultimate goal is to reduce carbon emissions to a minimum and reduce the temperature on the premises,” he said.
