A week after reports said that Apple’s Mac Mini vanished after a sudden surge in AI demand amid a tightening supply chain, it has sparked a massive, overpriced resale market on eBay. The sudden demand is largely attributed to the rise of on-device AI. Developers and hobbyists have discovered that the M4 chip’s power efficiency and unified memory make it a nearly perfect engine for running local AI models.According to a report by TechCrunch, while the “OpenClaw” model started the trend, the demand has expanded to alternatives like ZeroClaw and Perplexity Computer. Unlike bulky PCs or laptops that struggle with heat, the Mac Mini’s compact, quiet design allows it to run 24/7 as a dedicated AI server.
Empty shelves at Apple Stores
As of this week, the base M4 model (16GB RAM/256GB SSD) is unavailable for delivery or pickup on Apple’s official website in the US. Higher-end configurations aren’t faring much better, with shipping dates pushed back into June. This is also attributed to a global shortage of memory components that is slowing production.
Overpriced Mac Minis on eBay
With Apple’s stock depleted, buyers are turning to eBay, where prices have become more than the Apple Stores. The report said that on Friday, new “open box” base models, which are originally priced at $599, were selling for as much as $795. Refurbished units in “excellent” condition hit highs of $979, nearly 65% above the original retail price.Reportedly, one listing for a brand-new base model was spotted at $925, accompanied by an urgent “Last one” warning in bright red text. Even “lightly used” units are consistently moving for $700 or more, proving that for AI enthusiasts, time is currently more valuable than money. The shortage isn’t just a US problem. Last month, in China, the same desperation for AI-capable hardware has sent the second-hand MacBook market into a frenzy. Since new, high-spec machines are hard to find or too expensive, buyers are snapping up older MacBooks with high RAM capacities to use as “servers” for their AI agents.
