Gurgaon: MCG is preparing to roll out door-to-door collection of construction and demolition (C&D) waste and stepping up measures to dispose of it properly. The civic body has carried out 646 inspections at construction sites between Jan and March this year to increase enforcement. The updates were shared during a review meeting convened by the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) on Friday. An official said the move is part of a broader push to tighten waste management and curb dust pollution — both key to tackling the deteriorating air quality in the city.In the meeting, MCG commissioner Pradeep Dahiya outlined a multi-pronged strategy to tackle pollution. “Based on data from previous years, a target has been set to reduce the Air Quality Index (AQI) from 189 to 170 by 2026, along with a 10% reduction in PM 2.5 and PM 10 levels,” he said.According to MCG, Gurgaon generates nearly 1,500 tonnes of C&D waste daily, of which around 1,200 tonnes are currently being processed at Basai. To ease pressure on the facility, the civic body is planning to set up additional processing plants and around 20 designated collection points.Besides waste management, the plan focuses on easing traffic congestion, scaling up electric vehicle infrastructure, and intensifying dust control measures. To curb vehicular emissions, MCG plans to expand its public bus fleet in phases. Furthermore, 20 EV charging stations and 25 battery-swapping stations are being set up, with agreements already in place.Officials also identified 31 traffic congestion hotspots across the city and the infrastructure around them is being redeveloped to avert gridlocks and tailbacks. Surveillance is being strengthened with 1,200 cameras already operational and over 2,700 more in the pipeline. On the dust control front, the official said 20 mechanical road-sweeping machines have been deployed, supported by anti-smog guns and water sprinklers. A large-scale cleaning drive covering 294 roads is underway, along with GPS-based monitoring of equipment. The city has also set a target to redevelop over 493 kilometers of roads. At the Bandhwari landfill site, around 17.93 lakh metric tonnes of legacy waste remains. Officials said processing capacity of up to 2 lakh metric tonnes per month has been established, with a target to clear the backlog by March 2027.CAQM officials noted progress made by Gurgaon but directed authorities to accelerate implementation and adhere to quarterly targets to ensure measurable improvement in air quality.
