CJI Surya Kant forms high-powered panel to modernize courts, seeks up to Rs 50,000 crore from government

The move is expected to give a major push to judicial reforms and improve access to justice across India.

NEW DELHI: Chief Justice of India Surya Kant has announced the formation of a high-powered committee to prepare a nationwide roadmap for the modernization of courts and push for a massive financial allocation of Rs 40,000 crore to Rs 50,000 crore from the government for judicial infrastructure, as per a report by PTI news agency.The newly constituted “Judicial Infrastructure Advisory Committee” will be headed by Supreme Court judge Justice Aravind Kumar and will focus on addressing long-standing infrastructural gaps in the judicial system across the country through enhanced funding and technological upgrades.The committee will include Justices Debangsu Basak, Ashwani Kumar Mishra and Somasekhar Sundaresan from the Calcutta, Punjab and Haryana, and Bombay high courts respectively. The director general of the Central Public Works Department and the secretary general of the Supreme Court will also be part of the panel, as reported by PTI.It will work on seven major areas aimed at improving judicial infrastructure and efficiency. These include identifying systemic bottlenecks, enhancing facilities for litigants and lawyers, and introducing advanced technology to speed up disposal of cases, the announcement further added.The panel will also prioritize strengthening the “e-courts” initiative to bridge the digital divide in the justice delivery system and support the construction of modern court complexes equipped to meet the needs of the 21st century.The move is expected to give a major push to judicial reforms and improve access to justice across India.
