Kerala assembly results: How VD Satheesan rebuilt UDF's minority bridge

When VD Satheesan took over as opposition leader in 2021, UDF was visibly disconnected from key social blocs that had once anchored its politics, especially Christian communities. With the latest results, that arc appears to have come full circle, with minority communities returning to UDF.The drift dates back to the aftermath of the Marad riots and remarks by then chief minister AK Antony that triggered unease among Christian communities. By 2006, there was a clear consolidation of minority votes towards LDF. “Even during the 2011-2016 UDF government under Oommen Chandy, that disconnect persisted,” said political observer Roy Mathew.Satheesan’s own early positions deepened the rift. His backing of late MLA PT Thomas during the Madhav Gadgil report controversy brought him into conflict with sections of the Church. Thomas, who supported the Gadgil report opposed by the Church, was denied the Idukki seat ahead of the 2014 Lok Sabha election under pressure from Church leadership. Satheesan escalated matters by questioning whether the Church would accept political parties appointing priests—drawing sharp backlash. The shift began in Nov 2022, when the Indian Pentecostal Church invited him to the Kumbanad convention. On Jan 18, 2023, he addressed a packed gathering on ‘Thy Kingdom Come’, opening as a Hindu believer before interpreting Biblical themes. The speech — now part of his upcoming book ‘Adam Nee Evide Aakunnu’ — went viral. “At several gatherings I have attended, I have noticed that the opposition leader often interprets Biblical verses with a depth and clarity that, at times, even many Christians do not bring out. When he speaks about contemporary issues, he frequently connects them with relevant Biblical references. For someone from another faith to have studied and internalized it to this extent is quite remarkable. In my view, this knowledge has certainly helped in strengthening Congress’s relationship with Christian organizations,” said Baselios Marthoma Mathews III, head of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church.Invitations soon followed across denominations, including the Heavenly Feast youth conference in Kochi. Satheesan went on to address nearly 235 Christian gatherings — an unprecedented outreach for a political leader in Kerala. These were not political meetings but faith platforms.“These were not mere attempts to impress audiences but were grounded in genuine interpretation. In my assessment, this has significantly helped in bringing Christian organizations back closer to the Congress,” said Malayil Sabu Koshy Cherian, Bishop of the Central Kerala Diocese of the Church of South India.Senior Church leaders — including Cardinal Baselios Cleemis and Syro-Malabar head Mar Raphael Thattil — have acknowledged this engagement, signaling a shift in equations. A similar approach extended to Muslim platforms, where Satheesan engaged with Quranic themes. What emerged was a steady rebuilding of trust through religious and cultural engagement. Whether strategic or organic, the shift is now visible — and politically consequential.
