As per a report by Cinema Express, RJ Balaji recently opened up about why he decided to include the watermelon scene in ‘Karuppu’. He said many young people and Gen-Z audiences do not know that Suriya was the original person who did that scene style first.RJ Balaji said, “Many young people, including Gen-Z aren’t aware who was the original person to pull it off.”

Watermelon Star‘ reference

He also spoke about how content creator T Diwagar made a parody version of the same scene and became famous online as the “Watermelon Star.”RJ Balaji added, “Suddenly, during an interview, someone told me, ‘You even made Suriya sir do that!’ I was shocked because he was actually the first person to do it.” The director also shared that he was confused at one point about keeping the scene in the film. He worried that audiences might misunderstand it. But later, he decided to recreate the moment in a fresh and fun way instead of copying the old version completely. He said, “I want Suriya sir to act, dance, sing, and deliver punch dialogues, but not in a predictable manner.”

About ‘Karuppu’

Speaking about the film, ‘Karuppu’ is set to be an action-fantasy drama which also features Yogi Babu, Indrans, Sshivada, Swasika, Natty, Supreeth Reddy, and Anagha Maya Ravi in ​​important roles. RJ Balaji will also appear in a cameo role.‘Karuppu’ is set to release in theaters on May 14, 2026.
