As AI-generated songs flood the internet, Spotify is taking a stand for human creativity. The Swedish streaming giant has launched “Verified by Spotify” badge (in beta) – a light green checkmark designed to let listeners differentiate between human artists and AI personas as well as content farms. The company says that the move comes as part of a broader effort to provide “transparency and insight” into the music discovery process, ensuring that fans can trust the authenticity of the artists they follow.
What the new Spotify badge means
The “Verified by Spotify” icon will appear next to artist names in search results and on their main profiles. To earn this badge, an artist must meet strict criteria reviewed by both automated systems and human experts. To be verified, an artist must show:Real-world presence: Spotify looks for identifiable activity outside of the app, such as upcoming concert dates, official merchandise, and linked social media accounts.Consistent engagement: According to the company, the badge is reserved for artists with sustained listener interest over time, rather than those who see a one-time “spike” in engagement. The third and probably the most important thing is that the artist and their music must follow all of Spotify’s official rules and guidelines. Notably, Spotify stated that profiles representing AI-generated or AI-persona artists are not eligible for the verification badge.Beyond the checkmark, Spotify is introducing a new “About” section on artist profiles that functions similarly to a nutrition facts label on food. This section will highlight data-driven milestones, such as release history, which is how often and when the artist puts out new music, real-time signals of live performances and key achievements based on Spotify’s platform data. This feature will be available even for artists who haven’t yet earned a verification badge, giving fans a clear look at the “authentic activity” behind any profile.
