Noida: The labor department on Saturday canceled the licenses of 10 labor contractors for violations under the Contract Labor (Regulation and Abolition) Act, 1970.Additional labor commissioner Rakesh Dwivedi said the department was carrying out inspections and enforcement to ensure industrial peace and safeguard workers’ interests.“On Friday, we served notices to 203 contractors in this regard. In view of irregularities found in compliance with labor laws, licenses of 10 contractors have been cancelled,” he said.In some cases, workers were made to work overtime without adequate compensation; in others, salaries and bonuses had not been cleared. These grievances are believed to have contributed to the protests that led to widespread damage.A letter has been sent to the labor commissioner, recommending that the contractors be blacklisted. The department has also issued notices to 43 additional contractors seeking explanations regarding the violence.On Wednesday, UP govt had warned labor contractors and outsourcing agencies in Noida and Greater Noida that they will be blacklisted and their licenses canceled if workers deployed by them are found involved in violence or disruption.The move came days after industrial protests in Noida turned violent, with vehicles, including police SUVs, set ablaze and cops pelted with stones in several sectors.“Outsourcing agencies play an important role in running industries and generating employment. It is also their responsibility to keep workers disciplined and properly trained so that no disorder or unrest arises. If any agency or its employees engage in disruptive behaviour, the agency concerned will be held responsible. In such cases, action will be taken to blacklist the agency and cancel its license,” infrastructure and industrial development commissioner Deepak Kumar said.
